How Mukaish Work is Produced
Mukaish work, also known as Mukaish embroidery or badla work, is a traditional embellishment technique from Lucknow, India. It involves inserting fine metallic threads into fabric to create a shimmering effect, making it a popular choice for festive and bridal wear.
Step-by-Step Process of Mukaish Work
1️⃣ Fabric Selection
- Lightweight fabrics such as chiffon, georgette, muslin, or silk are commonly used.
- The fabric must be strong enough to hold the metallic embellishments without tearing.
2️⃣ Preparation of Metallic Strips (Badla)
- Thin metallic wires (gold, silver, or copper) are flattened and twisted into delicate strips.
- These strips, called badla, are hand-inserted into the fabric using a needle.
3️⃣ Embedding the Mukaish Dots
- Artisans carefully insert the metallic threads into the fabric at tiny points to create dotted, floral, or geometric patterns.
- The thread is then twisted, cut, or pressed down to secure it.
4️⃣ Types of Mukaish Work
- Fardi Work – Tiny metallic dots spread evenly across the fabric, creating a subtle shimmer.
- Jaal Work – A web-like or netted pattern covering the fabric for a heavier look.
- Figurative Designs – Custom motifs such as flowers, birds, or paisleys crafted with metallic threads.
5️⃣ Polishing & Finishing
- The fabric is gently pressed and polished to ensure the metallic work sits smoothly.
- Additional embellishments like zardozi or sequins may be added for a more opulent effect.
The Timeless Appeal of Mukaish
Mukaish work is prized for its understated elegance, adding a royal shimmer to sarees, dupattas, lehengas, and suits. Though originally done with real silver and gold, modern versions use synthetic metallic threads, making it more accessible while preserving its charm.
